Tanzania: Information on Tanzania's treatment of Malawian refugees from 1970 to 1994, and whether Tanzania grants any particular status to these individuals

Information on whether Tanzania grants any particular status to Malawian refugees other than that recognized under international law is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa. According to a fax sent to the DIRB by an official of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Ottawa, there are about 500 Malawian refugees and exiles in Tanzania, the majority of whom are waiting to be voluntarily repatriated (31 Oct. 1994). For general information on Tanzania's treatment of refugees from all countries, please refer to the attachments.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
