Avant l'union de l'île de Zanzibar et du Tanganyika en 1964, Zanzibar comptait plusieurs partis politiques, dont: le Parti Afro-Shirazi, le Parti Nationaliste du Zanzibar, le Parti Umma et le Parti des peuples du Zanzibar et de Pemba [ "The Merchant of Hope", Africa events, June/July 1988. p.21.].

La Tanzanie est un Etat uni-parti: le "Revolutionary Party Chama Cha Mapinduzi" (CCM) [ Keesing's Reference Publications, Political Parties of the World. P. 445.]. Elle compterait un mouvement d'opposition: le "Tanzanian Revolutionary Youth Movement" (ou "Tanzanian Democratic Youth Movement") [ Keesing's Reference Publications, Revolutionary and Dissident Movements.
