According to the African Newswire Network, Temeke is one of the electoral constituencies in the capital, Dar-es-Salaam, and is reputed to be a stronghold of the Civic United Fronts (CUF) (3 Nov. 2000).
The Guardian of 26 January 2001 reports that the following CUF leaders were present in Temeke on 26 Janury 2001:
Professor Ibrahim Lipumba National Chairman
Shaibu Akwilombe Deputy Secretary-General
Hania Chaurembo Deputy Director for Finance
Ernest Lyanga, Deputy Director for Human Rights
Shabaan Ngozi Secretary of Elections
Yusufu Karama CUF photographer

Frank Magoba MP for Kigamboni
Prof. Ibrahim Lipumba, Frank Magoba and about 50 other leaders and members of CUF were reportedly arrested "for staging an illegal meeting" in Temeke (ibid.; Tomric Agency 26 Jan. 2001).
Members of the Field Force Unit (FFU) reportedly "roughed up" the leaders of the CUF, fired gunshots in the air and threw gas canisters into the crowd before arresting the leaders (ibid.).
According to the Tomric Agency, of those arrested, "16 more people [were] believed to be members of CUF were facing court charges for holding unlawful rally," while "36 were released on the ground that they joined the rally unknowingly" (26 Jan. 2001).
