Zimbabwe: Existence of any threat from the Robert Mugabe government to Zimbabweans residing in neighbouring countries (1999-June 2002)

Information on the existence of any threat from the Robert Mugabe government to Zimbabweans residing in neighbouring countries could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

However, alleging "security concerns," a 1 May 2002 Daily News article noted that an UNHCR representative in Botswana refused to reveal the name of a Zimbabweans who fled his country to seek refugee in Botswana. While the cause of those "security concerns" was not specified in the article, the same source of information, citing another UNHCR official, stated that the life of a Zimbabwean who sought refuge in Namibia "was under threat because of the close political relations between Zimbabwe and Namibia." (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
