No mention of legal proceedings being initiated by Eladio Maje Martínez or Jorge Eduardo Durán could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
However, according to the Democratic Civil Resistance (Resistencia Civil Democrática, RCD), a group which reportedly brings together Colombians of all social strata who have been displaced by "narco-terrorism" (RCD n.d.a), Jorge Eduardo Durán Rozo was killed by members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC) Southern Bloc in the Municipality of Paicol, Huila, on 23 February 1997 (ibid. n.d.b). Durán, who had served as mayor of La Plata on three occasions as well as a deputy in the Departmental Assembly of Huila (Asamblea del Huila), was travelling to a farm in the company of friends and La Plata municipal employees when guerrillas stopped the vehicle in which he was travelling, ordered him to lay on the ground and shot him a number of times in the head (ibid.). The report did not indicate why Durán was targeted by the FARC.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
