Ban urges end to fighting along Chad-Sudan border

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, concerned by recent violence and tensions in the border area between Chad and Sudan, today urged an end to the hostilities.

Mr. Ban "calls on all parties to cease fighting," his spokesperson said in a statement.

"He underscores that there is no military solution to the situation in the sub-region and urges the Governments of Chad and Sudan to refrain from any act that may lead to a further escalation of tensions," the statement added.

Violence has continued along the border despite the signing of an agreement by the two countries in Doha in early May.

The Secretary-General had called on both Governments to work towards fully implementing the pact in the hopes that it would result in an easing of tensions and foster the conditions for stability in the sub-region.
