U.S. Committee for Refugees World Refugee Survey 1999 - Jamaica

Jamaica hosted 45 refugees and asylum seekers at year's end. The largest number were Cubans, with 17 recognized refugees and 8 pending a refugee status determination. Jamaica also hosted 9 Haitian refugees.

Jamaica is a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and adjudicates asylum claims through a governmental ad-hoc eligibility committee comprised of members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the attorney general's office, and the Ministry of National Security and Justice. UNHCR provides advice to the eligibility committee on request.
