Voting starts in Latvia's early parliamentary elections

September 17, 2011

Voting has begun in Latvia's early parliamentary elections.

Polls say the most votes could go to the Harmony Center party, backed by the country's large Russian minority, which makes up a third of the population.

The second runner is the newly formed Reform Party of ex-president Valdis Zatlers.

The election was forced by a July referendum, when more than 90 percent of voters backed a move to dissolve the legislature over a corruption scandal involving a powerful business leader and member of parliament.

Latvia has been harder hit by the economic and financial crisis than any other member country of the European Union and has one of the highest unemployment rates in the bloc.
