U.S. Committee for Refugees World Refugee Survey 2001 - Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan hosted some 18,500 refugees and asylum seekers at the end of 1999. A large majority, 17,000, were Tajiks; another 1,500 were Afghans. The government newly recognized 375 Afghans as refugees during the year. More than 2,300 refugees repatriated from Turkmenistan in 1999, including some 2,200 Tajiks and a small number of Afghans and Azeris.

Most of the refugees from Tajikistan in Turkmenistan were ethnic Turkomans who entered between 1992-94. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), they "were integrated to the extent that they did not need individual protection documents" from UNHCR.
