Uzbek governor fired by legislature

The longtime governor of Uzbekistan's Bukhara region has been sacked at a special session of the regional legislature, RFE/RL's Uzbek Service reports.
A senior official in the Bukhara governor's office who asked not to be named told RFE/RL that Samoydin Huseinov was fired on December 27 during a meeting of the legislature in the city of Bukhara.
Huseinov, 65, had served as governor since 1996.
The official said Muhiddin Esonov, the mayor of the small nearby town of Vobkent, will replace Huseinov.
There has been no official report about the dismissal of Huseinov. The official in the governor's office gave no reason for his firing.
But on December 26, state television in Bukhara showed a special program in which some local tax officials and two of Huseinov's sons were blamed for corruption.
Media reports from Bukhara said Huseinov's sons and some of his relatives control many gas stations in the region.
The province of Bukhara is in the southwestern part of Uzbekistan and has a long border with Turkmenistan. It has a population of some 1.55 million people.
