Throughout the year, street clashes over the economic downturn and drug trafficking generated increased pressure on the mainly private news media to self-censor. They did so to protect themselves and the tourism industry. Newspapers are independent and diverse. The government exerts pressure, however, through granting of advertising and imposing taxes on imported newsprint. There are six commercial television channels and dozens of radio stations.
