Argentina: RETA, a youth detention centre in Mendoza; whether an inmate committed suicide while detained at the centre in February or March 2000 (January-December 2000)

In a 12 December 2000 interview, an official with the Socio-Educational Guidance Centre (Centro de Orientación Socio Educativa, COSE) in Godoy Cruz, Mendoza stated that his organization was known as the RETA Institute (Instituto RETA) until roughly eight years ago, when its name was changed to COSE. According to the official, COSE serves as a detention centre for minors of both sexes, and currently houses approximately 80 inmates (ibid.). This information is corroborated by the Mendoza newspaper Diario Los Andes, which stated in a 2 October 2000 report that COSE "houses minors from 14 to 21 years of age who are in conflict with the law" (alberga a menores de 14 a 21 años de edad que están en conflicto con la ley).

No reports of a minor committing suicide while in detention in Mendoza could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
