Burundi: Information on provisions of the citizenship law of Burundi regarding dual citizenship and naturalization of Rwandans

In a telephone interview an official at the embassy of Burundi in Ottawa stated that Burundi does not recognize dual citizenship with any other country (11 May 1995). The official also stated that Rwandans are subject to the same naturalization procedures as any other country's citizens (ibid.).

For general information on the nationality law of Burundi and a commentary on the law, please consult the attachments to Response to Information Request BDI11782 of 29 September 1992, which is available at Regional Documentation Centres.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
