Burundi: Lycée du Saint-Esprit, including its status (public or private), its location, the ethnic make-up and number of students (1996 - September 2002)

The following information was provided by the Acting Rector of the Lycée du Saint-Esprit during a 9 September 2002 telephone interview. The interview was conducted in French.

Located in Gihosha, a northern zone of the capital Bujumbura, the Lycée du Saint-Esprit, a seven-year secondary school, has about 920 students. The Lycée comprises three sections: "Scientifique A", "Scientifique B" and "Lettres Modernes".

Before 1987, its was named « Collège du Saint-Esprit » and was located on the hill of Kiriri in the eastern part of Bujumbura. The college was managed by priests of the Jesuit congregation.

In 1987, the school was moved to Kamenge, a northern zone of Bujumbura, and was named the « Lycée de Kamenge ». Until 1990 the school was managed by Burundian government authorities.

In September 1990, the school's name changed again and became « Lycée du Saint-Esprit ». Following the implementation of a new administrative division in the city, the Lycée is considered to be located in the zone of Gihosha even though it remained in the same place. Furthermore, the management was given again to the Jesuit congregation.

The Lycée is now classified into the category of schools known as « écoles publiques sous convention catholique ». This means that while they are still public schools, they are managed by a catholic authority.

Between September 1990 and March 2000, Guillaume Ndayishimiye was the Rector of the Lycée du Saint-Esprit, while between March 2000 and November 2001, the Rector was Ignace Samurenzi. Since then, Robert Albertijn has been Acting Rector of the Lycée.

As other secondary schools in the country, the Lycée du Saint-Esprit does not identify its students' ethnic background or keep statistics on them according to their ethnic groups.
