Burundi: Procedures for minors to change their surname; with which authority the change should be made; whether parental consent is required for minors to make the change (2003-2004)

The first secretary at the Embassy of Burundi in Ottawa provided the following information during a 27 October 2004 interview. The first secretary, who is also a lawyer, said that minors, that is, children under 18 years of age, cannot apply to the authorities to change their family name on their own. Their parents would have to make the request on their behalf and appear before a judge of a court of first instance in the district where the children are registered. However, the first secretary could not say whether the consent of both parents was required to change minors' surname.

No additional information on the procedures for minors to change their surname could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
