According to statistics provided by the Office of the Commissioner-General for the Refugees and Stateless Persons of the Kingdom of Belgium, the number of asylum seekers from Bulgaria who applied for refugee status in Belgium was 883 in 1999 and 1,662 in 2000 (10 Jan. 2002). For both years, none of the applicants was granted refugee status (ibid.).
In correspondence dated 12 February 2002, an official with the Office of the Refugee Applications Commissioner of Ireland stated that information on the acceptance rate of Bulgarian asylum seekers in 2000 could not be made publicly available (Ireland).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
