In 16 August 2006 correspondence sent to the Research Directorate, a representative of the Embassy of Algeria in Ottawa indicated that the family record book (livret de famille) is issued to the head of the family by the institution that solemnizes the marriage (i.e. city hall or the consulate). In a telephone conversation, the representative of the Embassy of Algeria stated that the family record book contains information on the members of a particular family (last name, given name, date and place of birth, and address of the husband, wife and children) (Algeria 18 August 2006). The family record book also contains the date and place of the marriage (ibid.). All information in the family record book is written in Arabic (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
