Article 4 of the Law on Citizenship states that "female aliens" shall acquire Estonian citizenship "upon marriage to an Estonian citizen." The law does not make a similar provision for males who are foreign nationals to acquire citizenship upon marriage to an Estonian woman. In a telephone interview on 1 March 1993, the Consul for the Republic of Estonia stated that there had been no changes to the citizenship law of Estonia in regards to the status of a foreign man married to an Estonian woman. He indicated that a foreign man married to an Estonian must go through the same procedures as other foreign citizens in order to acquire Estonian citizenship.
