Information concerning the current employment requirements of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line (IRISL) could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, the following information may be of interest.
The company describes itself as
the largest commercial shipping company in the middle east, owning more than 94 ocean-going vessels, with DWT capacity of 2.97 million tons (120 vessels with more than 3.1 million tons with affiliated companies), flying the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran, operate globally carrying all kinds of cargo comprising of dry bulk, general cargo, containerized, project heavy / lengthy and specialized cargo to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
IRISL is a pioneer shipping line offering door-to-door services and T.B.L. shipment to the C.I.S. countries and to the Caucasus, through the Persian gulf ports of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Imam Khomeini (IRISL 12 Nov. 2001).
According to an interview with the Chairman of IRISL published in the Payam-e Darya Shipping Magazine, the shipping company " currently operate[s] 87 ships, including bulk carriers, general cargoes and containers carriers" (Spring 2001). According to the firm, "IRISL and its affiliated companies have about 10,000 employees, 3,500 of whom work on ships. Out of this number, there are 400 foreign employees, nevertheless, IRISL prefers to employ Iranian experts" (ibid. 12 Nov. 2001). According to a special publication of Iran International published in September 2001, the IRISL's workforce was 7,000.
