Iraq: About the General Union for the Iraqi Women's Federation

No information on an Iraqi women's organization called the "General Union for the Iraqi Women's Federation" could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

However, there is in Iraq an organization called The General Federation of Iraqi Women which was "reactivated" by the Iraqi government (United Nations General Assembly Special Session 8 June 2000). A Website entitled Middle East and Islam refers to the General Federation of Iraqi Women as a "pro [Saddam]-Hussein organization promoting human's rights in Iraq" (20 May 2002).

At the end of 2000, representatives of the General Union (or Federation) of Iraqi Women were present at the execution by decapitation of "dozens" of women who were accused of prostitution (Daily Mail 2000; M2 Presswire 6 Apr. 2001). The executions took place in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities (ibid.).

For more information, please consult the Website of this women's organization at <http://www.uruklink.net/women/eha1.htm>.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
