In February 2002, Pok Yuthea was fired from his position as an adviser to the Senate Chairman, Chea Sim (who is also the president of the ruling Cambodian People's Party) (AP 8 Feb. 2002). Yuthea reportedly "lur[ed] hundreds of workers into paying dlrs 500 deposits with the promise of overseas construction jobs for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece" (ibid.). According to a news report by the Associated Press, "[n]one of the workers have traveled to Greece to work, though they were originally told they would go there in August 2001" (ibid.). According to the article, workers demonstrated and burned tires at the Phnom Penh courthouse to convince court officials to aid them in recovering their deposits (ibid.). As of 8 February 2002, 140 of the 1,263 workers had been refunded their deposits (ibid.).
Yuthea was also "a key member of a Cambodian company called Cambodian Consultants and Associate, or CCA" (ibid.).
