Mladic fit to stand trial, proceedings to start in March

A judge at the UN court in The Hague has said that the trial of former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic, accused of committing genocide and war crimes during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, should open in March.
Alphons Orie said at a session of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia that he expected to schedule the pretrial hearing on March 26 and the opening statements on March 27.
Citing an expert medical examination, Orie said that Mladic, 68, was fit to stand trial.
Mladic was arrested in Serbia on May 26 after 16 years on the run. He is facing 11 overall counts including genocide for the July 1995 Srebrenica massacre, when more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys were killed over a period of six days.
He has denied the charges.
