Reports citing unnamed U.S. officials say Al-Qaeda's chief of operations in Pakistan, Abu Hafs al-Shahri, was killed in a drone strike in Pakistan's tribal area.
One of the officials, speaking under condition of anonymity, said "Abu Hafs' death removes a key threat inside Pakistan where he collaborated closely with Tehrik-e Taliban (the main Pakistani Taliban group) to conduct coordinated attacks."
The date and place of the strike that killed Abu Hafs, described as a Saudi national, was not given.
The reported killing of Abu Hafs comes after Al-Qaeda's number two Atiyah abd al-Rahman was killed in August.
