The press freedom situation was quite good, but a dangerous precedent was created when three TV stations were forced to hand over their film to a court.

A court upheld on 13 August 2002 an appeal by the TV stations Televicentro, Telemundo and Univisión against a court order on 11 July for them to hand over to justice officials all film their reporters had taken of clashes sparked by a 20 June demonstration by supporters of the opposition New Progressive Party (PNP).
