United Kingdom: Home Office

The Home Office is the UK government department responsible for leading the national effort to protect the public from terrorism, crime and anti-social behaviour. The UK Border Agency, a Home Office shadow agency and successor of the Border and Immigration Agency, manages border control, enforcing immigration and customs regulations, and considers applications for permission to enter or stay, citizenship and asylum.

Operational guidance notes (OGNs) provide a brief summary of the general, political and human rights situation in the country and aim to provide clear guidance to UK Border Agency case workers on whether the main types of claim are likely to justify the grant of asylum, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave. Country policy bulletins are issued on an ad hoc basis and aim to provide clear guidance on how to deal with particular country-specific issues arising in asylum and human rights applications. For more information, visit the UK Border Agency website: http://ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/.

The Research, Development and Statistics (RDS) is an integral part of the Home Office. The RSD Country of Origin Information Service provides accurate, objective, up-to-date, sourced information on asylum-seekers' countries of origin. This includes: COI reports, COI key documents, COI bulletins and COI fact-finding mission reports. For more information, visit the RDS website: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/. Website: www.homeoffice.gov.uk/
