U.S. Committee for Refugees World Refugee Survey 1997 - Guinea-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau hosted an estimated 15,000 refugees from Senegal at the end of 1996. An armed insurgency in Senegal during the 1990s has pushed some 15,000 refugees into Guinea-Bissau. The refugees primarily lived without UNHCR assistance in small villages in northwest Guinea-Bissau, within eight miles of the border with Senegal. About 500 refugees occupied a special UNHCR-prepared site, Jolmete, 40 miles from the border. UNHCR maintained no regular programs in Guinea-Bissau and was unable to monitor repatriation to Senegal closely. No significant repatriation was reported, but modest numbers might have left Guinea-Bissau to return home, taking advantage of a cease-fire in Senegal’s conflict area.- Search
