A representative of the Palestine Information Center in Washington stated that the above sentence means that the person will lose his/her residence status in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) if the travel document is not renewed in time (11 Dec. 1991). The same information was provided by a representative of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in Washington (11 Dec. 1991). The representative of the Palestine Information Center added that, for example, a student will have to go back to the UAE in order to have the document renewed (Ibid.).
According to a representative of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in Washington, if the person returns to the UAE with an invalid travel document, the UAE authorities will probably refuse to let the person stay inside the country (Ibid.).
A representative of the United Arab Emirates Embassy in Washington mentioned that the person has to go back to the UAE in order to renew the travel document (11 Dec. 1991). If the person has been out of the country for more than six months the travel document is considered invalid and the person will not be allowed back in the UAE (Ibid.). Normally a person would be able to return through a sponsorship (Ibid.). Parents, for instance, will be able to sponsor their children under the condition that the parents have a legal residence permit (Ibid.). In the post Gulf war context, no Palestinians will be allowed to return to the UAE even if they have a sponsor and are following the legal procedures (Ibid.).
