Former Guantanamo prisoner killed in Afghanistan

A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who joined the Taliban upon return to his native Afghanistan was killed overnight by NATO-led forces in the east of the country, local officials said.
Sabar Lal was killed by troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghan security forces in Nangarhar Province, the coalition confirmed in a statement.
ISAF declined to say if Lal was kept in Guantanamo, but Afghan officials speaking on condition of anonymity said he was released from the U.S.-run prison in Cuba three years ago after being held there for five years.
ISAF said he was strongly connected to the Al-Qaeda network.
Afghan and ISAF troops killed Lal in an overnight operation when he emerged from a building carrying an assault rifle, the coalition statement added.
Around 170 foreign captives are still held by the U.S. military at Guantanamo.
