Baptists in Ukraine hospitalized with food poisoning

October 12, 2011

RIVNE, Ukraine Thirty-five members of an evangelical Christian community in Ukraine, including 11 children, have been hospitalized with food-poisoning symptoms, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

The victims are being treated in hospitals in the northwestern province of Rivne's Mlyniv and Duben districts.

The Rivne prosecutor's office said the patients started feeling sick after eating a harvest festival meal at the Baptist church in Mlyniv on October 9.

All of the estimated 250 people who attended the festival are undergoing medical examinations.

Earlier this month, 19 evangelical Christians in the northwestern town of Volyn were hospitalized with stomach problems after eating cakes following a religious service.

Both incidents are being investigated.

The overwhelmingly majority of Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians.
