Refugee Livelihoods Project

A follow-up to the PDES's work on protracted refugee operations, this project seeks to understand refugee livelihoods strategies and assess the effectiveness of different livelihoods interventions. It does this through a series of case studies on self-reliance, as well as thematic papers on the promotion of livelihoods in situations of displacement and instability.

Focusing largely but not exclusively on the world’s least developed countries, it pays special attention to issues of gender, age and physical capacity (including the impact of HIV/AIDS on refugee livelihoods).

It has also established The Refugee Livelihoods Network, an interactive electronic network on refugee livelihoods to facilitate the exchange of information, ideas and papers among UNHCR staff, consultants, and staff of other agencies, academic and research institutes.
