GENERAL INFORMATION

The UNHCR Archives holds a wide range of historic documentary material from UNHCR offices around the world. In the course of its daily business, UNHCR creates and receives documents in many forms, including letters, faxes, e-mail, photographs, sound recordings, videotapes and posters. The portion of this information that has lasting value is preserved in the UNHCR Archives.

As an international body entrusted with the protection and care of refugees on a world-wide basis, UNHCR has been involved in most significant refugee situations since 1951. It has also played a leading role in ongoing efforts to improve the status of refugees and to safeguard their rights and interests through international agreements and measures at the national level. The records held by the UNHCR Archives are therefore a unique source of information not only about the activities, policies and the development of the organization, but also about various refugee situations as well as the status of refugees internationally and nationally.

The UNHCR Archives holdings extend to over ten kilometers of shelving.
