Introduction to Kenya’s biggest camp &BLURB=Dadaab is Kenya’s biggest camp, with some 140,000 refugees mostly from Somalia. UNHCR and partners like Care provide assistance like water and food distribution, health care, education and community development. One of the challenges is to keep refugee youth motivated in the enclosed setting of a camp. Refugee women, too, often find themselves facing problems in the camp. In the first years of the influxes into Kenya that started in 1991, the rape of women and girls by bandits, thugs and other criminals occurred with shocking frequency and magnitude. Today, through the sustained interventions of the government law enforcement agencies and the work of UN agencies and NGOs, rape incidents In Dadaab have dropped from 1,500 to 16 in 2004. Besides engaging refugee youth and preventing sexual and gender based violence, UNHCR and Care are also providing skills training to equip the refugees for life in exile and in the event they choose to return home in the future.
