UN Refugee Agency delivers 80 metric tons of core relief items to internally displaced persons in Nubul and Zahra in Aleppo governorate, Syria

9 May 2014

Damascus - The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) delivered today urgently needed Core Relief Items (CRI) to internally displaced persons (IDPs) within Nubul and Zahra within Aleppo Governorate. The delivery was part of an inter-agency convoy that consisted of 20 trucks. The UNHCR's 4 trucks of relief items included 1,000 plastic sheets, 5,000 blankets, 1,000 jerry cans, 400 hygiene kits, 3,000 sleeping mats and 444 diapers.

"This is a break-through in accessing besieged areas in accordance with the directives of Security Council Resolution 2139. It is the first time that humanitarian assistance reaches the IDPs within Nubul and Zahra since the start of the crisis in March 2011. We are planning for a second convoy to follow right away and we have pre-positioned CRIs for 50,000 IDPs in the 2 locations," Tarik Kurdi, The UNHCR Syria Representative stated.

UNHCR estimates that more than 60,000 IDPs are currently in Nubul and Zahra out of a total of 6.5 million IDPs in Syria.
