Czech Republic

The Czech Republic has the largest number of refugees per capita in Europe. In 2022, 465,058 refugees applied for Temporary Protection status or similar national protection schemes in the country. As of September 2022, 162 Ukrainians applied for asylum in the country.

UNHCR’s National Office in the Czech Republic is located in Prague and is part of UNHCR Central Europe, based in Budapest, Hungary. Our office opened in 1992 in connection with the Czech Republic’s accession to the Refugee Convention of 1951 and its 1967 Protocol.

The Czech Republic’s well-established asylum framework has high-standard reception conditions and a State Integration Programme, which has expanded due to the Ukraine crisis.

UNHCR in the Czech Republic supports an asylum system enabling international protection applications to be assessed according to internationally-recognized standards and international law. We support government-led efforts through a multisectoral response with a focus on protection, those with specific needs, increasing community support, capacity building and inclusion initiatives.
