First issued in 1922, the \u201cNansen passport\u201d served as both an identity document and a travel permit allowing its holders to seek work in other countries. By the time the Nansen passports were <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">discontinued<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\"> in 1942, over 50 countries had recognized <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">them<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\"> and 450,000 refugees had received one.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\"> \u201cGiven <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">the historical importance of the Nansen passport, we <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">featured<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\"> an original Nansen passport specimen, in its characteristic accordion-like format, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">as <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">the central item of our exhibition<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172840238 BCX0\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW172840238 BCX0\">explains <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW172840238 BCX0\">Amanda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW172840238 BCX0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The exhibition featured document specimens issued based on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refworld.org\/legal\/agreements\/icor\/1946\/en\/88101\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1946 London Agreement<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, signed after World War II as a testament to early international efforts to protect refugees by providing a form of identification and ability to travel across borders. Travel documents issued based on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/about-unhcr\/who-we-are\/1951-refugee-convention\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and its 1967 Protocol and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/ibelong\/wp-content\/uploads\/1954-Convention-relating-to-the-Status-of-Stateless-Persons_ENG.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> were also displayed. Both Conventions (Article 28) feature access to travel documents as a distinct right for refugees and stateless people. Machine-readable refugee travel documents and electronic Convention Travel Documents (e-CTDs) that are in use today were also part of the exhibition.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cGoing through the UNHCR archives collection while setting up the exhibition was a unique learning experience for my colleagues and me. It helped us put our current advocacy efforts on this issue into perspective,\u201d says Amanda.
