World Refugee Day
Every year on 20 June, the global community marks World Refugee Day. On this day, we commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees across the globe.
In 2016, there were 65 million of forcibly displaced persons worldwide. By the end of 2017, this number exceeded 68 million persons, more than half of whom were women and children.
In 2017, Belarus received 748 applications for asylum – most of them from nationals of Ukraine, Iraq, and Syria. As of June 2018, there were 327 refugees registered in the country, and 2344 persons with complementary protection.
UNHCR thanks the Government of the Republic of Belarus, diplomatic corps, UN sister agencies, NGOs, private sector, Goodwill Ambassador Iskui Abalyan and Celebrity Supporter Melitina Staniouta for their valuable contribution to the refugee cause in the Republic of Belarus.
