Eradicating Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) of the people we serve and Sexual Harassment (SH) in the workplace is a top priority for UNHCR.  In 2018, UNHCR stepped up its efforts to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct through a series of measures including prevention, awareness-raising, effective investigation, victim and witness protection, and robust action against those found to have engaged in SEA.

The reinforcement of vetting and reference checking mechanisms to prevent transgressors from moving through the humanitarian system is a key part of these efforts. UNHCR has taken new measures to this effect, both internally and through interagency efforts. UNHCR was among the first agencies to roll out the UN SEA and SH Clear Check trackers, launched in June 2018, and have undertaken an initial mapping of vetting mechanisms with a view to improving internal processes. In continuation of this work and to ensure that consistent preventative measures are taken with respect to recruitment in all categories of the workforce, additional capacity to run sexual misconduct checks is being established.
