Turkish singer Muazzez Ersoy was appointed a UNHCR National Goodwill Ambassador in 2006, and worked tirelessly for over a decade with UNHCR to help shine a spotlight on the refugee cause. Muazzez joined UNHCR with a long-standing interest in humanitarian issues and a particular concern for the welfare of women and children. Her mother’s family came from the Salonika region of Greece but was forced to leave for Turkey in the first half of the 20th century. Muazzez has visited refugee families in the central Anatolian cities of Kayseri and Aksaray, listening to their problems and sharing her family’s experience with them. She regularly supported the work of UNHCR in Greece through public statements and media, raising awareness about the suffering of displaced people around the world.
