As of end March 2024, there are some 187,010 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.

As of end March 2024, there are some 187,010 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.  

  • Some 164,310 are from Myanmar, comprising some 108,440 Rohingyas, 25,600 Chins, and 30,270 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar.  
  • The remaining individuals are some 22,700 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 6,140 Pakistanis, 3,270 Yemenis, 2,800 Syrians, 2,770 Somalis, 2,760 Afghans, 1,250 Sri Lankans, 650 Iraqis, 620 Palestinians, and others.  

Some 65% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 35% are women.

There are some 51,770 children below the age of 18.

 

UNHCR statistics does not map or reflect new arrivals into the country. 
    
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.

According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
