UNHCR Hands Over Two-Bedroom Accommodation Facility to Ghana Police Service in Bono Region
UNHCR Ghana has handed over a two-bedroom newly constructed accommodation facility to the Ghana Police Service, Berekum West Divisional Command at Fetentaa Refugee Camp in the Bono Region. The facility was built as part of UNHCR’s effort to enhance the capacity of the Police in promoting security as well as assisting in addressing the accommodation needs of the Police personnel posted to the Fetentaa Police Station. The building will serve as the Police Station Officer’s bungalow.
At a short ceremony to hand over the facility, UNHCR Head of Field Office, Samuel Dzikunu, on behalf of the UNHCR Country Representative, thanked the Chiefs and people of Fetentaa host community for creating the enabling environment for the refugees. He described the peaceful coexistence between the refugees and the host community members as commendable. Mr. Dzikunu further thanked the District Security Council and the Police for raising the status of the Police station to a full-fledged police station to serve both the Refugee camp and the host communities.
“UNHCR recognizes the importance of security and places premium on safety and security of both the refugees and host community members as well as their properties hence UNHCR’s continuous support to the Police” Samuel Dzikunu
The District Chief Executive Hon. Isaac Osei, who is also the Chairman of the District Security Council received the keys to the facility and was grateful to UNHCR for the support which he said was in the right direction. He said for a young District such as Berekum West, such support goes a long way. The District Police Commander was equally very grateful to UNHCR for the continuous support to the police in the area.
The Chief and his Elders commended UNHCR for always supporting the community. They recounted how the presence of the Fetentaa Refugee Camp has helped the community in many ways.
“Thanks to the presence of the Fetentaa Refugee Camp, we can boast of a health center, a school and a Police station, all through the support of UNHCR”
Nana Addai Kwai, Akwamuhene, Fetentaa Traditional Council
UNHCR has earlier constructed a Police Station as well as Police Quarters to accommodate junior officers in the area.
The District Police Commander, Berekum Divisional Command, Chiefs, Queen Mother and the Elders of Fetentaa Traditional Council and the Ghana Refugee Board Regional Coordinator, were all present at the handing over ceremony.
