In Colombia, forced internal displacement affects millions of people; nearly 8.3 million since 1985, out of whom 6.8 million require assistance. In the department of Choc\u00f3, located on Colombia’s Pacific coast, some 542,000 people have been forcibly displaced between 1993 and August 2022.<\/p>\n

The armed conflict extends to urban areas, where children and adolescents are exposed to the risks of forced recruitment and abuse by irregular armed groups, sexual exploitation, forced labour and substances abuse.<\/p>\n

Since 2002, UNHCR has accompanied victims of forced displacement and confinement in Choc\u00f3, complementing the State’s humanitarian response, providing technical assistance to the responsible entities, and strengthening the self-protection mechanisms of affected communities. One of the key actions has been the accompaniment of children and adolescents through sports. This is how the “Ven\u00ed Jug\u00e1<\/em>” (Come and play) project started.<\/p>\n

“Ven\u00ed Jug\u00e1” is both a protection strategy and a methodology that promotes local integration of boys and girls in Quibd\u00f3, capital of the department of Choc\u00f3 in Colombia, through psychosocial support and the promotion of sports practices. The Asociaci\u00f3n de J\u00f3venes Desplazados Nueva Imagen en Uni\u00f3n<\/em> (AJODENIU), a youth organization that led this initiative with the support of UNHCR and funds from the International Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was a child, my family and I lived in the community of Antad\u00f3 La Punta and moved to the city of Quibd\u00f3. In 2020, we were once again forced to leave our home and we moved to a new neighborhood, El Obrero.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Until 2020 I participated in many neighborhood tournaments. In 2019, I also participated in a sports training programme in Ibagu\u00e9, Tolima. However, the pandemic did not allow me to continue.<\/p>\n

Through my photos I would like to show participants of the Ven\u00ec Jug\u00e1<\/em> programme, but also, I intended to demonstrate the strong unity that has emerged between peers and how we use dialogue as a fundamental tool.<\/p>\n

For us, soccer is important because it helps us keep our minds busy and gives us the opportunity to laugh, interact and meet other people, as well as to develop our abilities as human beings. It is a way to distract myself, it allows me to clear my mind and consolidate friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted to be a professional soccer player, but I am studying telecommunications engineering and what I most want is to finish my degree.<\/p>\n
