UNHCR celebrates World Refugee Day 2015 with Libraries and Bookshops across Ireland
To mark this year’s World Refugee Day on 20 June, UNHCR Ireland partnered with bookshops and libraries across the country to celebrate the positive contribution that refugees and asylum seekers have made to literature, photography and story-telling.
The annual two-week book reading campaign, which ran this year from the 15-28 June 2015, helped encourage readers young and old alike to learn about refugee experiences and refugee issues through literature. The initiative allows readers to explore the devastating impact of war on families and helps to raise awareness about the ongoing plight of refugees while inspiring hope and understanding through their stories.
In addition to the national campaign, UNCHR Ireland was also delighted to gain a firsthand insight into the courage and determination that goes into creating a bestseller as we caught up with National Book Award Winner Thanhha Lai and internationally acclaimed auto-biographer and activist Loung Ung.
While this year’s campaign may have drawn to a close, UNHCR would like to continue to encourage readers to continue to expand their horizons by reading one of the titles on our suggested reading list.

UNHCR Ireland would like to greatly thank all those who took part in this year’s campaign and extend our gratitude for the hard work of Irish bookshops and libraries without which this campaign would not be such a great success.
