Agricultural cooperatives and capacity-building
Challenge
Many residents of Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi – including 26% of camp residents under five years of age – suffer from chronic malnutrition, due to food security challenges and a lack of livelihood opportunities.
Solution
Solidarity of Refugee Women for the Social Welfare (SOFERES) is training refugees and host community members on farming techniques and financial literacy, as well as providing agricultural inputs and seed funding. 20 farming cooperatives will be established to improve competitiveness and market-access.
Impact
200 people, mostly women, from the refugee and host community will benefit from capacity-building, improved livelihood opportunities, and greater market access. Camp residents will experience enhanced food security, with improved health outcomes.
