Challenge

In India, the manual processing of emails from refugees to UNHCR’s mailbox is often time-consuming and prone to errors, making it challenging to respond rapidly to time-sensitive queries. There is a critical need to enhance the efficiency of this communication system to strengthen UNHCR India’s accountability to affected populations (AAP).

Solution

An AI-based tool, leveraging a large language model (LLM), will help sort, prioritize, and refer emails to the right UNHCR staff. This solution will be able to remove duplicates, protect privacy, and organize messages by topic or urgency, while preserving human oversight and intersecting with existing digital inclusion initiatives.

Impact

The tool will reduce response time for urgent queries, facilitate response tracking, provide status updates, and collect metadata. This will improve UNHCR India’s AAP and, if successful, will be scalable to other UNHCR operations through Application Programming Interface (API) models, which is a way for different software systems to connect and share information automatically.
