Challenge

Severe climate events – such as flooding, extreme heat, water scarcity, and food loss – make shelters unsafe and increase protection risks for refugees in Nyumanzi refugee settlement. With crops destroyed and water contaminated, siloed interventions fail, perpetuating health crises, malnutrition, and economic instability.

Solution

Safe Home Africa is combining elevated, flood-resistant shelters, rainwater harvesting systems, and vertical gardens into one household unit. Activities include participatory design workshops, construction of prototypes, and training household members in resource management and sustainable agriculture practices.

Impact

Improved living conditions for 30 refugee households newly housed in climate-resilient living pods. In addition, 100 refugees will receive training in integrated pod management, construction, water systems, and climate-smart agriculture.
