Challenge

The ongoing arrival of forcibly displaced people in Uganda – with limited support available and rising food insecurity – is leading to environmental degradation, with wetland ecosystems exploited for livelihoods and agriculture.

Solution

UNHCR will introduce fish farming in swamps around the settlements to provide more sustainable livelihood opportunities, boost food security, and reduce destructive agricultural practices.

Impact

Empowerment of local communities (particularly women and youth), provision of sustainable livelihoods and food sources, maintenance and regeneration of wetlands.

Project impact

20
refugees trained in aquaculture and marketing
30
fishponds established or rehabilitated
400
community members trained to ensure sustainability

Other information

This project motivated 10 additional farmers outside of the refugee settlements to start fish farming, thanks to the affordability of fish feeds offered as part of the initiative.
