Reimagining refugee education through immersive VR learning
Challenge
Urban refugee youth in Kampala face disrupted schooling, overcrowded classes, language barriers, low literacy, and limited technology. Girls face added risks, and COVID-19 deepened digital exclusion, leaving learners disengaged and unsupported by traditional, rote-based education systems.
Solution
Soccer Without Borders is establishing Uganda’s first refugee-focused virtual reality learning hub, equipped with 10 VR headsets and workstations, to deliver VR-based literacy, numeracy, STEM, and trauma-sensitive learning modules. Refugee youth leaders will be trained as VR facilitators. Weekly sessions and holiday programs will integrate immersive technology with SWB’s proven soccer-based learning model.
Impact
Creating engaging and trauma-sensitive learning for refugee and host youth, improving literacy, numeracy, and social cohesion through immersive digital learning tools. The programme will train 300 youth and certify 4 facilitators, at least half of whom will be women.
