Challenge

Refugee craftspeople can earn an income through their creations, including globally through the MADE51 platform, but accessing high-quality raw materials in low-resourced countries is difficult and costly. Scarcity of materials hampers artisans' ability to meet standards and sustainability requirements while importing materials raises costs and increases the environmental footprint.

Solution

By integrating waste repurposing and sustainable local resource use into crafts, refugees can expand material options, reduce costs, and boost environmental sustainability. Testing traceability and documentation processes and supporting design collaborations with brands and artisans will help create market-ready products that meet customer expectations and showcase refugee talent.

Impact

Diversified materials result in competitively priced products for buyers and fewer risks to refugee artisans. Environmental sustainability, aligning with new EU requirements, and strong design attracts new retail partners and brands, leading to successful sales and reorders. This drives MADE51 artisans to scale production, enabling more refugees to earn income through their craft.
