The contest was widely announced amongst NGOs working with refugees and displaced persons, and received 165 submissions from 57 countries. From a shortlisted ten candidates, an international jury comprised of UNHCR, ICVA, a refugee-led community-based organisation, an international humanitarian organisation, and partners from the private sector and academia selected the two winners, which are SINA Loketa from Uganda and Artemisszi\u00f3 from Hungary. The Social Innovation Academy in Uganda (SINA) works with youth from marginalized backgrounds, including refugees, to turn their own personal tragedies into social enterprises, thereby disrupting root causes of social problems. In 2018, SINA has spread to the Bidi Bidi refugee settlement. Five start-ups were created where refugee and host community youths transform social problems into job opportunities through the development of personal and professional skills.<\/p>\n<p>Through innovation, young refugees take destiny in their own hands. SINA Loketa is awarded for building on creative capacities of young people to develop social capital in refugee and host communities.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>Artemisszi\u00f3 Foundation, Hungary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Artemisszi\u00f3\u2019s mission is to help people break the barriers that separate cultural and social groups. Its founders believe that everybody has knowledge to share and can contribute to making the community prosper. Artemisszi\u00f3 created MIRA, a community regrouping 200 Hungarians and refugees from diverse backgrounds, where the common goal is not to help each other \u201cintegrate\u201d, but to build up a society that is proud of its diversity. The primary audiences are secondary school students, targeted through workshops, and museum\/gallery visitors by way of digital installations. The aim is to address the deep misunderstanding towards global displacement crisis and realities of experiences of displaced people across the UK.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>DanChurchAid, Kenya<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DCA Kenya and DCA Learning Lab prototyped a localized, participatory and blended approach to building youth\u2019s business skills and entrepreneurship via mobile phones in Kakuma refugee camp. By involving learners from both refugee and host community into content creation through identifying learning objectives and priorities, and by collaborating with local media office to produce content, this proposal aims to&nbsp; deliver training for youth development which is context-relevant and cost-efficient with a strong focus on peer-to-peer learning.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>DanChurchAid, Uganda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DCA in Uganda works to promote financial inclusion by providing agricultural and marketing information to farmers in refugee and host communities in order to enable them to increase income through producing crops for the market. DCA plans to use existing GMS services offered by Mobile Network Operators in delivering information on appropriate agronomic practices, market information and available digital financing services.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>Makers for Change, France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Makers for Change in France believes collaboration between diverse social groups improve social integration. It proposed to promote intercultural dialogue via its digital tool \u201cMatching for Change\u201d to create working groups, with participants united by shared interests and motivations rather than origins and social backgrounds. These groups will then be supported in the creation of intercultural projects. It proposed to test how community interpretation can be provided by a social enterprise, that remains committed to METAdrasi&#8217;s values, will benefit from the trust built around the METAdrasi brand and existing cooperation with public and private entities while reinforcing the integration of refugees. By creating SYNAPSE, a social enterprise that belongs equally to all its members, METAdrasi will evaluate if SYNAPSE will hold the expertise and values of community interpretation while being able to effectively compete in the marketplace.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>Refu Interim, Belgium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Refu Interim in Belgium aims to address the challenge of finding jobs and combating discrimination and other difficulties refugees face at the workplace. They proposed to create an immersive role-playing game named \u201cCamplife\u201d that confronts companies and organisations (employers) with challenges and experiences of refugees and how these can mirror those common in the Belgian life and workplace. \u201cCamplife\u201d can be a tool for intercultural communication and awareness-raising about refugees issues in the workplace.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>Terre des hommes, Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Terre des hommes proposed \u2018People to People\u2019 (PtP) deliveries, an online platform that allows people to transfer goods and services safely among each other, overcoming the lack of postal services between two conflict sides. Two types of users such as \u2018senders\u2019 and \u2018couriers\u2019 would be able to interact through the website\/app, rate each other and leave feedback for the services provided. At later stage, the proposal is to also test the user experience with elderly people. The proposal will also test on how to involve more female participation to ensure gender balance and equality on the platform.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.87&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<strong>Translators without Borders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Translators without Borders aims to address language gaps in humanitarian emergencies by expanding voice\/text machine translation (MT) within a communication tool for migrant and refugee children and youth to improve access to information and user feedback. The goal is to produce data sets in marginalized languages that are of particular relevance in in humanitarian work, for example Levantine Arabic, a dialect of Syria and neighbouring countries. The Award is given to NGOs from any country\/territory that demonstrate commitment and creativity to achieving improved efficiency of services for forcibly displaced people.<\/p>\n<p>The Award is a UNHCR Initiative. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees and other persons of concern.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/2018-unhcr-annual-consultations-with-ngos\">UNHCR Annual Consultations with NGOs \u2018Putting People First\u2019<\/a> &#8211; to be held in Geneva 27-29 June 2018 &#8211; the tremendous work of NGOs will be highlighted through various mediums. This year we will launch the first Innovation Award to recognize and catalyse creative solutions to improve the lives of refugees, host communities and persons of concern. UNHCR believes innovation is a process of designing, experimenting, and learning and the Award aims to support and showcase NGOs working through this process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE AWARD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A first prize of USD 10,000 and a second prize of USD 8,000 will be granted to two winners. One representative of each winning NGO will be invited to an award ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland in December 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NGOs in any country or territory are eligible.<\/p>\n<p>UNHCR seeks applications from NGOs that would like to test new approaches, ideas or elements of a project that will increase the efficiency of delivering services to refugees and other persons of concern. The Award is not looking for well-refined project plans, but projects and\/or ideas that still can be adapted and made better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applications must meet the following requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applications must be original ideas, with original design and approach.<\/li>\n<li>Applications should be submitted in English.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SELECTION CRITERIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shortlisting will take place based on a comprehensive technical review. After shortlisting, a jury of UNHCR and NGO innovation experts will evaluate applications using the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance to Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UNHCR defines innovation as a process of designing, experimenting, and learning. Innovation is a process to introduce a change and\/or something new into systems. Innovation is not synonymous with the application of technology, nor does it necessarily result in the output of one specific product.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commitment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications should demonstrate commitment to the priority of \u201cputting people first\u201d in addressing forced displacement.<\/p>\n<p>Applications should raise awareness for refugees and other persons of concern.<\/p>\n<p>Applications should reflect the values of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/about-us.html\">UNHCR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications should demonstrate how the experimentation or experimentation plan has been co-created or led by affected communities, with a focus on gender equality, inclusion, and diversity.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row background_position_1=&#8221;top_left&#8221; By completing submissions, applicants agree to the publication of the names of participating organizations and personnel, addresses and other submitted materials and any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any UNHCR propose. Applicants grant UNHCR the right to disseminate their work through knowledge\/awareness\/capacity-building activities globally.<\/p>\n<p>Award winners will receive a monetary prize.&nbsp; In order to receive the monetary prize, Award winners shall enter into contractual agreements with UNHCR, in line with UNHCR rules and regulations and any income tax regulations in the country of legal residence of the organization. The monetary prize must be used for innovation activities for the benefit of refugees and persons of concern. Further documentation, such as proof of legal status and governance of the organization shall be required by UNHCR.<\/p>\n<p>In accordance with the contract to be entered into with the Award winners and UNHCR, a reporting\/monitoring mechanism will be established on the winners\u2019 use of the monetary prize. Award winners are expected to submit a final narrative report detailing the key challenges, lessons learnt and successes etc.<\/p>\n<p>UNHCR reserves the right not to select any applicants, or to cancel the Award for any reason at any time.
