_builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, believes digital technology is one of the most important vehicles for the economic empowerment and self-reliance of refugees \u2013 and its significance is only set to increase. However, while the global digital economy has the potential to drive positive change and allow forcibly displaced people to access meaningful livelihoods, it can also pose serious challenges and potential risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, UNHCR and the International Labor Organization (ILO) have embarked on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/PROSPECTS-Country-teams-Intro.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Promotion, Inclusion and Protection of Refugees in the Gig Economy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project. Funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands through its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalcompactrefugees.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-11\/PROSPECTS%20Factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PROSPECTS Opportunity Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this project aims to provide refugees and hosting communities with safer and more dignified access to digitally enabled livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/infographic_digital_risks_prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researching emerging risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the digital economy in order to better advocate and design interventions for the safer digital inclusion of forcibly displaced and stateless people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\">In 2023, UNHCR partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.17triggers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>17 Triggers<\/span><\/a><span> to conduct a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/ImprovingDigitalLivelihoodOpportunitiesforRefugees.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series of community-based workshops<\/a> across all PROSPECTS countries, to understand the opportunities of and barriers to online work, and co-create solutions with refugee communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together with our partners at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ILO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNDP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Emerging-practices-to-improve-access-to-and-working-conditions-on-digital-labour-platforms-for-refugees-and-host-communities-%E2%80%93-Joint-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researching and gathering examples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of emerging practices that help facilitate access to and improve the working conditions of platform-mediated work for refugees and host communities.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Experimenting&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We test innovative models for refugees\u2019 to access dignified work online through targeted pilot projects across the PROSPECTS countries, with a strong focus on providing education and training to boost digital awareness, market-driven digital skills, and online safety, as well as enhancing access to a safe and secure digital infrastructure and workspaces. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These pilots include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Lebanon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: UNHCR and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anera.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are equipping refugees and stateless people with digital skills to overcome access barriers. We\u2019re providing awareness sessions and digital risk training to mitigate and manage risks online. Charging stations and internet facilities will also be installed in areas with severe electricity shortages to address connectivity-related risks. The project will enhance our understanding of how the communities we work with and for are already using digital economy platforms, for more targeted interventions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Ethiopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: UNHCR and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gebeya.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gebeya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have launched a customized digital labour platform to connect businesses to talent within refugee and host communities, creating a more inclusive digital economy. Bespoke training and mentorship will improve the competitiveness of refugee and host communities, enhancing their access to work. Learnings will be generated by documenting the differences between user journey processes of candidates on the specialized marketplace versus the main marketplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Egypt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Leveraging the existing infrastructure and the skills of participants who benefited from PROSPECTS funded community learning centres, UNHCR\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdh.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terres des Hommes<\/a> aim to enhance the safe employability of forcibly displaced people and hosting communities on digital labour platforms by raising awareness of digital risks through targeted campaigns driven by refugee-led organizations and using creative methods to deliver English-language training and certification. To improve access to adequate digital infrastructure for work, UNHCR also plans to establish co-working spaces with women-friendly zones. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Uganda<\/b><span>: UNHCR and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.projecthelloworld.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Hello World<\/span><\/a><span> are revitalising a connected community centre in BidiBidi refugee settlement, through an innovative and sustainable community-driven model, and will deliver digital skills training.
